About the Keyword Density Checker

Calculate keyword density free. Find the most frequent words and 2–4 word phrases in any text, with counts, percentages and stop-word filtering.

Keyword density is one of the oldest ideas in SEO and one of the most misunderstood. It began as a ranking lever in the 1990s, was abused into meaninglessness by the early 2000s, and now functions mainly as a diagnostic — a way to see what a page is actually about, in the page's own words.

What density tells you that is useful

On your own content, it detects repetition you cannot feel while writing. A term appearing forty times in eight hundred words will read as obsessive to a human even if no algorithm notices. It also confirms coverage: if you wrote a guide to image compression and the word "compression" appears twice, you probably drifted off topic.

On a competitor's content, it is a fast topical map. The most frequent two and three-word phrases on a page that outranks you are a strong indication of the vocabulary the search engine associates with that query. That is legitimate research and it directly informs your outline.

Why single words are nearly useless

Any English text is dominated by function words — the, of, and, to, a, in. Even with stop-word filtering, single-word frequency in an article about, say, converters will be topped by "file", "image" and "convert" in some order, telling you nothing you did not already know.

Two-word phrases are where signal appears. Three-word phrases are better still: they capture the actual expressions people use and search for. Four-word phrases get sparse but occasionally reveal a defining sentence.

The calculation, precisely

density = (occurrences of term / total words) × 100

For a phrase, one occurrence of image compression in a 1000-word document is 0.1%, even though it contains two words. This is the standard definition and the reason phrase densities always look small. Comparing your phrase density against a raw threshold like "2%" is meaningless — compare it against the same phrase on a competing page instead.

Keyword stuffing, and where the line is

Stuffing is not a density number; it is a readability failure. The signals that matter are:

  • the same phrase repeated in immediate succession or in a list with no surrounding prose;
  • phrases that do not fit the grammar of their sentence;
  • hidden text — white on white, off-screen positioning, or zero-size fonts;
  • a block of keywords with no coherent content at all.

None of these are detectable by density alone, which is why this tool pairs the numbers with in-context highlighting. Seeing every occurrence in place makes forced usage obvious in a way a percentage never will.

A better use of your time

Density analysis is a five-minute sanity check, not a strategy. The work that actually moves rankings is covering the subtopics a searcher expects, answering the questions the query implies, and writing clearly enough that people stay on the page. Use the checker to confirm you did those things, not to decide what to write.

What is a good keyword density?

There is no target number, and there has not been for well over a decade. Natural writing on a focused topic typically lands between 0.5% and 2% for the primary phrase. Search engines do not use density as a ranking factor; they use it, if at all, as one of many spam signals at the extremes.

Is keyword density a ranking factor?

No. Google has said explicitly that there is no ideal keyword density and that stuffing triggers spam classification rather than improving relevance. What matters is topical coverage — whether the page discusses the subject thoroughly, using the vocabulary a searcher would expect.

How is density calculated?

Occurrences of the term divided by total words, expressed as a percentage. For a phrase, the phrase counts as one occurrence while its component words still contribute to the total word count, which is why multi-word phrase densities read lower than single-word ones.

Should I analyse my own content or a competitor's?

Both, for different reasons. Analysing your own detects accidental repetition and confirms you covered the subtopics you intended. Analysing a page that outranks you reveals the vocabulary and phrasing that search engines associate with the query — which is genuinely useful competitive research.

Does it handle stemming and synonyms?

The tool matches terms as written, with optional case-insensitive comparison. It does not stem (so 'run', 'runs' and 'running' count separately) because aggressive stemming produces misleading results for short texts. Check both forms if the distinction matters.
