WebP won the web, but plenty of destinations never got the memo: marketplace product uploads, print services, passport and visa forms, older content management systems and a long tail of desktop applications still demand JPG. This converter exists for that hand-off moment.
How the conversion works
The browser decodes the WebP into an uncompressed bitmap with its native decoder, the bitmap is drawn onto a canvas — flattening transparency onto your chosen colour if the target has no alpha — and the canvas is then encoded as JPEG at the quality you set. Both steps happen in your tab; there is no server in the path.
Choosing a quality level
- 95–100% for anything that will be edited or printed again. Near-transparent re-compression.
- 85–90% for uploads where the file size limit is the constraint. The usual sweet spot.
- Below 80% only for thumbnails, where blocking artefacts around edges become visible on close inspection.
When you should not convert
If the destination is a web page, JPG is the wrong answer: it will be larger than the WebP at equal quality and it cannot carry transparency. Convert to JPG only when a specific recipient requires it.

Will converting WebP to JPG reduce quality?
Slightly, and only where you ask for it. WebP is decoded losslessly to pixels; the JPG encoder then discards detail according to the quality you set. At 90% and above the difference is hard to spot on photographs.
What happens to transparent backgrounds?
JPG cannot store transparency, so transparent pixels are flattened onto the colour you choose — white, black or light grey. The preview shows the result before you download.
Why is the JPG sometimes larger than the WebP?
WebP's lossy mode is simply more efficient than JPEG's at the same visual quality, typically by 25–35%. If size matters more than compatibility, keep the WebP or convert to it instead.
