Why is part of my photo cut off?
A circle must sit inside a square, so the tool crops to the centre square first. For wide group shots, crop closer to the subject beforehand with the image resizer, then circle-crop.
Do the corners download as white?
No. They are fully transparent alpha in the PNG. If a platform then places the avatar on a coloured background, the colour shows through the corners.
What size should an avatar be?
Most platforms display 40-400 px but accept larger; exporting at your source resolution and letting the platform downscale gives the sharpest result. Resize afterwards if you need an exact pixel size.
