Does this keep the GIF animated?

No. This tool re-encodes the first frame into a static WebP, which is what you want for a thumbnail, badge or banner. For a moving image, keep the GIF or use an animated WebP encoder.

Why WebP instead of PNG for a GIF?

PNG is lossless but often larger than a lossy WebP at indistinguishable quality for flat artwork. WebP also keeps transparency, so it is usually the better web target.

What quality should I choose?

Start at 85%. Flat graphics and logos stay sharp down to 75-80%; detailed photographs look best at 90% and above. The size figure updates as you move the slider.
