Overview

About the Halftone Image Effect

Convert an image to halftone dots free online for a retro newspaper print look, with an adjustable dot spacing. Rendered on your device — nothing uploaded.

How halftone reproduces tone

Printers cannot lay down a continuous shade of grey, so they cheat with dots. A halftone divides the image into a grid and draws one dot per cell, sizing each dot according to how dark that area is — big dots for shadows, small dots for highlights, none for pure white. From a distance your eye blends the dots back into smooth tone.

The retro print look

This is the exact technique behind newspaper photographs, vintage magazine pages and comic-book shading. Applying it digitally gives artwork an authentic printed, pop-art feel that flat digital images often lack.

Choosing dot spacing

Smaller cells mean more dots and finer detail, closer to real newsprint. Larger cells make the dots obvious and graphic, which suits posters and stylised art. Bold, high-contrast subjects hold their shape best at any spacing.

Computed on your device

The dot grid is calculated per pixel on an in-browser canvas and exported as a lossless PNG, so the dots stay perfectly crisp and your source image is never uploaded.

Step by step

How to use the Halftone Image Effect

  1. Drop a high-contrast image onto the upload area.

  2. Set the dot-spacing slider; smaller dots give finer detail.

  3. Bold subjects with clear tones read best as halftone.

  4. Download the halftone PNG for print, posters and comic art.

Why use it

Benefits and common use cases

What this tool is good for, and what it deliberately does not try to do.

Real dot-based halftone

The image is divided into a grid and each cell is drawn as a black dot whose size follows the local darkness, exactly how newspapers and comics reproduce photos.

Instant retro print style

Halftone evokes vintage newsprint, pop-art comics and screen-printed posters, turning any photo into bold graphic artwork in one step.

Local and lossless

The dot pattern is computed per pixel on an in-browser canvas and exported as a crisp PNG, so your file stays private and the dots stay sharp.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Short, honest answers about quality, limits and privacy.

What does the dot spacing control?

It sets how large each halftone cell is. Small spacing gives many tiny dots and finer detail; large spacing gives big, chunky dots and a coarser, more graphic look.

Which images halftone best?

High-contrast subjects like portraits against simple backgrounds. Because the output is black dots on white, images with a clear tonal range produce the most recognisable result.

Is halftone the same as posterize?

No. Posterize reduces the number of colour levels but keeps solid areas; halftone simulates continuous tone using only dots of varying size, like real print.
