Tip Calculator & Bill Splitter

This tip calculator works out the gratuity and splits the total between any number of people. A tip calculator should do three things fast: work out the tip, add it to the bill and divide the lot between however many people are at the table. Enter the bill and a percentage and this tool shows the tip, the total and each person's share, with a quick-reference row for the common 10–25% amounts.

How the split works

The tip is bill × tip% ÷ 100, the total is bill + tip, and each person pays total ÷ people. The tip is divided evenly too, which keeps things simple when everyone ordered roughly the same.

Worked example

A bill of 85.00, an 18% tip, three people:

tip   = 85.00 × 18 ÷ 100 = 15.30
total = 85.00 + 15.30 = 100.30
each  = 100.30 ÷ 3 = 33.43

Three shares of 33.43 come to 100.29, one cent short of the total, because the division is rounded. Somebody has to absorb that cent — usually whoever pays first. On a large group bill the gap can reach several cents, which is why splitting by eye produces an argument rather than an answer. The tool also prints the tip alone divided by the party, so you can see each person's share of the gratuity separately from their share of the food.

Tip on the pre-tax or the post-tax amount?

Both conventions exist and the difference is small but real. If the printed bill already carries sales tax, a percentage of that total is slightly more than the same percentage of the food and drink. On a 100.00 bill with 8% tax the inclusive figure is 108.00: 18% of that is 19.44, while 18% of the pre-tax amount is 18.00.

This calculator works on whatever number you type, so decide which convention you want and enter that. To tip on the pre-tax amount where the bill is tax-inclusive, strip the tax out first with Sales Tax Calculator — it performs the correct reverse division, which subtracting 8% does not.

Custom amounts and rounding

The quick-reference row totals the bill at 10%, 15%, 18%, 20% and 25%, but the percentage field takes any value including decimals, so 17.5% works and so does 0 when a service charge is already on the bill. Check for that line before tipping twice, which is easy to do when a card terminal adds its own suggestion on top of a printed charge.

The headcount is rounded to a whole number, since half a person cannot pay. For a small bill, rounding the total up to a convenient figure often beats computing a precise percentage: leaving 50 on a 41.60 bill is about 20% and needs no arithmetic at all. For anything larger, or when the table wants to see the split, the exact figures here are faster than working it out between courses.
