The emboss convolution

Embossing works by subtracting each pixel from its opposite neighbour along a diagonal and centring the result on a mid-grey. Where the image brightens in that direction you get a highlight; where it darkens you get a shadow. Together these tiny bevels read as a surface carved or stamped in relief.

Choosing subjects that shine

Simple, high-contrast artwork embosses dramatically: a bold logo looks like a minted coin, and black text on white becomes engraved lettering. Detailed photographs produce a softer, more abstract texture, which can still look striking as a background or overlay.

Controlling depth

The depth slider scales the bevel strength. Low values give a subtle brushed-metal sheen; high values exaggerate the chisel for a harder, more graphic result. Because the effect is directional, the light appears to come from one corner, which sells the three-dimensional illusion.

What images emboss best?

Those with strong, simple shapes and clear edges — logos, silhouettes, text and line art. Busy photographs turn into a soft, muddy relief because there are too many competing edges.

Why does the result look grey?

An emboss centres tones around a mid-grey and adds the bevel on top, which is the traditional engraved-metal look. Raise the depth for a more pronounced chisel.

Is emboss the same as edge detect?

No. Edge detect draws only the outlines on a plain background; emboss keeps a shaded version of the whole image with a directional bevel, so it looks three-dimensional.
