In normal colour development the silver is bleached away, leaving only dyes. Bleach bypass skips that step, so metallic silver remains in the emulsion alongside the colour. What is bleach bypass?
Bleach bypass (silver retention) skips the bleaching step in film development, leaving silver alongside the colour dyes. The result is a desaturated, high-contrast image with milky blacks, famous from films like Saving Private Ryan.
Why do the blacks look washed out?
