Overview
Apply a classic sepia wash to JPG, PNG or WebP images for a vintage, album-print look. The filter runs on your device, so your photos are never uploaded.
Sepia takes its name from the ink of the cuttlefish, whose brown pigment was used to tone early photographic prints. The tone softens harsh contrast and adds warmth, which is why family albums and historical archives are so strongly associated with it. Digitally, the effect reproduces that chemistry by remapping luminance onto a warm brown ramp.
Sepia suits portraits, architecture and street scenes where mood matters more than colour accuracy. It is a poor fit for product photography that must show true colours, or for charts and screenshots where hue carries meaning. When in doubt, convert a copy and keep the original in colour.
A touch of extra brightness before sepia keeps shadows from going muddy, while a light blur afterwards can push the image further toward a remembered, dreamlike quality. Because each tool here outputs a standard PNG, you can chain them in any order without quality cliffs.
The browser decodes your image to an offscreen canvas, applies the sepia matrix, and encodes a fresh PNG. At no point is the file transmitted anywhere, so sensitive or personal photographs stay on your machine.

Why use it
What this tool is good for, and what it deliberately does not try to do.
Sepia shifts neutral greys toward warm brown, the signature of early photographic prints, which makes modern digital shots feel archival and intentional.
Applying the same filter to every photo in a series gives a gallery or lookbook a unified mood without hand-grading each frame.
Your source file is untouched and never leaves the browser; the sepia PNG is a separate derived copy you can discard at any time.
