Understanding saturation

Saturation measures how pure a colour is. Fully saturated hues are intense and pure; desaturated hues drift toward grey. The slider multiplies each pixel's distance from neutral grey, so raising it intensifies every colour at once and lowering it drains colour toward monochrome.

Choosing the right amount

Faded scans and overcast landscapes usually want 120-150% to look the way the scene felt. Portraits want restraint — skin turns orange quickly — so stay near 100-110%. Deliberately muted, editorial looks sit around 60-80%.

Saturation versus contrast versus vibrance

Contrast separates light from dark; saturation separates colour from grey; vibrance is a smart saturation that shields skin. Because they interact, adjust brightness and contrast first, then finish with saturation so the colour sits on a correct tonal base.

Is saturation the same as vibrance?

Not exactly. Saturation multiplies all colour intensity equally, while vibrance protects already-saturated pixels and skin tones. This tool applies uniform saturation, so go gently on portraits.

What happens at 0% saturation?

All chroma is removed, leaving a grayscale image. It is equivalent in effect to the grayscale converter, though reached through the colour channel rather than a luminance matrix.

Why do colours look neon when I push it high?

Channels clip at their maximum, so heavily saturated hues lose gradation and read as flat neon. Stay below about 160% for a believable result.
